If I had not known the true point of the Focus on the Family commercial during the Super Bowl ahead of time I would have been left scratching my head after it aired. There was only one reason why I knew about the ad, purposely watched for it and understood the meaning behind it; the thunderous and vicious outcry from liberals, atheists, feminists and the pro-abortion hacks.
Other than the surprise on-side kick by the Saints that started the second half of Sunday's game, Tim Tebow pulled off the second best play of Super Bowl XLIV. Without a single negative comment, without one word of standard propaganda and without one attack on the pro-abortion crowd, Tebow was able to expose the nasty underbelly of a movement that has hid behind one of America's most prize possessions, the word "choice."
If the ad was negative and used bloody images of aborted children and tearful mothers to make its point then I would understand an equally volatile retort. There would be grounds for a rebuttal of equal strength. So why was there such a furor over a mother who exercised her right to choose? Why the mockery and the conspiracy theories that Pam Tebow had no choice because abortions are illegal in the Philippines?
The internet has been run amuck with the false accusation that Pam Tebow's version of the story is a lie because abortion has been illegal in the Philippines since the 1930s. Well it took a long time to cut through all the pro-abortion advocates to get to an article from 2008 by Reuters that proved that abortions are permitted if the life of the mother is at risk. The Philippines is the third from the bottom. FACTBOX: Abortion law around the world
The answer is becoming more and more apparent and those that have lived in the fog of moral relativism are starting to see the underlying agenda of the pro-abortion movement and more and more Americans are not comfortable with it.
For years abortion advocates got away with taking ownership of one of America's most unique characteristics, choice. After all what is more American than choice? Very few outside of the pro-life movement dared to present the reality of abortion. When was the last time that there was a network news special focused on the severe physical and psychological consequences of abortion? How many of you have actually seen a video of an abortion taking place? Why don't schools include a video on abortion as part of their sexual education curriculum?
One of the main arguments against the Tim Tebow commercial and the questions that I asked above is that it would create an unfair bias against abortion. There is the concern that showing the reality of what abortion actually is would create a hostile attitude towards those that choose to have the procedure. I find it interesting how these same liberal minded people demand that we show battlefield casualties and flag draped coffins from Iraq and Afghanistan. According to them we need to see the reality of war; why not the reality of abortion?
War is often referred to as a necessary evil, what about abortion? Most would say yes. There are times when carrying a baby to term will likely kill the mother. There are pregnancies caused by acts of incest and horrendous violence. The vast majority of Americans would not think to scorn them. Americans in general are compassionate, forgiving and smart enough to tell the difference between an abortion that is necessary and the overwhelming majority that are based on convenience.
One of the best ways to determine if what you are doing is right or not is that it can stand up to open disclosure. There is no shame in doing what is right and that is true test of any choice. It isn't society at any particular point in history that determines what is right; it is inherent in our heart, it is what makes us human.
Stay Sharp!
